La description a été faite selon : "Report on the collection of fishes made by Mr. J. E. S. Moore in Lake Tanganyika during his expedition 1895-96". Transactions of the Zoological Society of London. pp. 1-37 sous le nom de Lamprologus moori (Boulenger, 1901) !
La localité type est le secteur de Mpulungu, en Zambie.
